Alaska-Specific Rules: Alaska has a partial helmet law — operators under 18, all passengers (any age), and permit holders must wear one; licensed operators 18+ may legally ride without a helmet. Alaska sets one of the highest insurance minimums in the country at 50/100/25. Turn signals are not required equipment. Alaska Motorcycle Test — Common Questions
Everything you need to know before taking your Alaska DMV motorcycle knowledge test.
The Alaska DMV motorcycle knowledge test has 25 multiple-choice questions. You need to answer at least 20 correctly (80%) to pass. Questions are drawn from the Alaska Motorcycle Operator Manual.
Alaska does not have a universal helmet law. A fully licensed operator 18 or older may legally ride without a helmet. However, helmets ARE required for: operators under 18, ALL passengers regardless of age, anyone riding on an instruction permit, and anyone taking the road skills test. Importantly, the passenger rule applies even when the operator is exempt.
Alaska uses three classes: M1 (any motorcycle over 50cc), M2 (motor-driven cycle permit for 14-15 year olds only, under 50cc), and M3 (three-wheeled motorcycles over 50cc). The M1 license is valid 5 years and expires on the rider's birthday.
Alaska requires $50,000 per person / $100,000 per accident / $25,000 property damage (50/100/25) — one of the highest minimum liability floors of any state in the country.
No. Alaska law does not authorize riding between lanes of traffic, moving or stopped. Note: two motorcycles may legally share a single lane side by side — but motorcycles may never share a lane with a car or other motor vehicle.
No — unlike most states. If equipped, they must be used correctly for lane changes and turns. Riders without turn signals must use proper hand signals instead.
For riders 21+: 0.08%. For commercial operators: 0.04%. For riders under 21: true zero tolerance at 0.00% — any readable BAC is a violation.
A third DUI within Alaska's 15-year lookback period is a Class C felony — a lower threshold than most states (typically 4 convictions). Alaska also requires an ignition interlock device for every conviction, including first offenses, with no exceptions.
Riders under 18 must hold a motorcycle instruction permit for at least 6 months, have parental consent, and complete an approved safety course before getting a full license.
The AK test covers 8 areas: motorcycle controls and operation (T-CLOCS, SEE strategy, M1/M2/M3 classes, 6-month under-18 permit period), lane positioning (splitting illegal, sharing legal between 2 motorcycles only), road signs and signals (including moose crossings), helmet and safety gear (partial helmet law, passenger rule, eye protection), Alaska traffic laws (50/100/25 insurance, BAC limits, 15-year DUI lookback, mandatory IID), hazardous conditions (moose collisions, frost heaves, short riding season, glacial fog), passengers and cargo, and rider fitness and responsibility.
