Georgia Teen Permit Test – Frequently Asked Questions

This FAQ explains everything teens need to know about the Georgia Teen Permit Test and the Georgia DDS Knowledge Exam. It covers Class CP permit rules, Joshua’s Law requirements, supervised driving hours, teen driving restrictions, and essential information to help you pass the Georgia learner’s permit test on your first attempt.

The Georgia Teen Permit Test is the official DDS Knowledge Exam required to get your Class CP learner’s permit. It includes questions on road signs, road rules, safety laws, and Georgia-specific teen driving regulations. Teens must pass this test before beginning supervised driving under Joshua’s Law.
Teens can take the Georgia DDS Knowledge Exam starting at 15 years old. Passing the exam earns you a Class CP learner’s permit, which is required for supervised driving before applying for a Class D license.
The Georgia teen permit test contains:
• 20 Road Signs questions
• 20 Road Rules questions
You must score 15/20 on each section to pass the DDS exam.
Teens must bring:
• Birth certificate or passport
• Social Security number
• Two documents proving Georgia residency
• School Enrollment Certificate (DS-1)
• A parent or guardian
These documents are required to issue your Class CP permit.
Joshua’s Law requires Georgia teens to complete a state-approved driver education program and 40 hours of supervised driving (including 6 hours at night) before getting a Class D license. This applies to all teens under 18 in Georgia.
A teen with a Class CP learner’s permit must be supervised by a licensed driver aged 21 or older, seated in the front passenger seat. Teens cannot drive alone at any time with a CP permit.
Teens must hold the Class CP permit for at least 12 months and 1 day before taking the Georgia road test for a Class D intermediate license. During this period, they must complete all supervised driving requirements.
Under the Class D license rules:
• No driving between 12 AM and 5 AM
• First 6 months: Only immediate family passengers
• Next 6 months: Only one passenger under 21 (not family)
• After 12 months: Up to three passengers under 21
These laws reduce crash risks for new teen drivers.
Teens may retake the Georgia DDS knowledge exam the next business day. Multiple failures may require longer wait times. Practicing with Georgia teen permit practice tests improves the chances of passing quickly.
The Georgia teen permit test is not available online. Teens must take the DDS Knowledge Exam in person at a DDS Customer Service Center. Always check DDS for updates as online testing rules may change.
The best way to prepare is by:
• Reading the Georgia Driver’s Manual
• Taking multiple Georgia teen permit practice tests
• Reviewing road signs frequently
• Understanding teen-specific laws under Joshua’s Law
Consistent practice makes the real test easier and increases confidence.
