New Jersey Motorcycle Test β Common Questions
Everything you need to know before taking your New Jersey MVC motorcycle knowledge test.
The New Jersey MVC motorcycle knowledge test has 50 multiple-choice questions β among the longest motorcycle knowledge tests of any state. You need to answer at least 40 correctly (80%) to pass. Questions are drawn from the New Jersey Motorcycle Manual.
Yes. New Jersey has a universal motorcycle helmet law β all operators and passengers must wear a DOT-approved helmet, no exemptions based on age, experience, or insurance. The helmet must fit correctly, have a neck or chin strap, and be reflective on both sides. Protective eyewear is also required unless the motorcycle has a windscreen.
Riders who take the road test on a motorcycle 231cc or less are restricted to motorcycles 500cc or less β noted as a "5" restriction on the license with an MVC-issued restriction card. Completing the NJ MSEP Basic Rider Course exempts riders from this restriction entirely.
Yes. Completing the NJ MSEP Basic Rider Course (a 3-day course requiring 100% participation) provides a road test waiver β you receive a completion card and skip the MVC road test. The written knowledge test is still required separately β the course does not waive it.
At least 20 days of practice are required before the road test. Riders under 21 must practice for at least 6 months; riders 21+ need only 3 months. The motorcycle permit itself is valid for 90 days.
No specific statute bans it, but it can be treated as reckless driving under N.J.S.A. Β§39:4-97. Lane sharing β two motorcycles riding side-by-side in one lane with mutual agreement β is legal and distinct from lane splitting.
For riders 21+: 0.08%. For commercial operators: 0.04% while driving a commercial vehicle. For riders under 21: zero-tolerance at 0.01% β any detectable alcohol triggers an underage DWI charge, and 0.08%+ means full adult DWI penalties.
New Jersey requires $15,000 per person / $30,000 per accident / $5,000 property damage (15/30/5) β the same minimums required for cars. Optional collision, comprehensive, and uninsured motorist coverage is strongly recommended.
The minimum age for a New Jersey motorcycle permit is 17. You must pass a written knowledge test and vision test at an MVC agency. Riders under 18 must complete the state-approved Motorcycle Safety Education Program.
The NJ test covers 8 areas: motorcycle controls and operation (T-CLOCS, SEE strategy, MSEP course, 500cc restriction, 20-day practice minimum), lane positioning (lane splitting risk, lane sharing legal, full-lane-use rights), road signs and signals, helmet and safety gear (universal helmet law, reflective requirement, eye protection), NJ traffic laws (15/30/5 insurance, BAC limits, lifetime DWI lookback), hazardous conditions (dense traffic, Pine Barrens sand, Highlands deer, bridge crosswinds), passengers and cargo, and rider fitness and responsibility.
Yes β all practice questions are fully mobile-friendly. Works on any smartphone, tablet, or desktop browser with no app download and no sign-up required. Tap an answer to get instant feedback and a detailed explanation of the correct answer and the relevant New Jersey law.
