Ohio Motorcycle Test — Common Questions

Everything you need to know before taking your Ohio BMV motorcycle knowledge test.

The Ohio BMV motorcycle knowledge test has 40 multiple-choice questions. You must answer at least 30 correctly — a score of 75% — to pass. This is unique: most states use an 80% pass mark. Ohio's slightly lower threshold still covers a broad range of content since the test is twice as long as many other states'. Questions are drawn from the Ohio Motorcycle Operator Manual.
The minimum age for an Ohio Motorcycle TIPIC (Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card) is 15 years and 6 months — not simply 15 or 16. This specific age is tested on the Ohio BMV exam. Applicants must pass the motorcycle knowledge test and vision screening. Adults with a valid Ohio driver license may complete the knowledge test online through Ohio BMV Online Services.
Ohio BMV's official TIPIC restrictions: daylight hours only, no passengers, no interstates or congested roads, and must wear a helmet and protective eyewear at all times. The TIPIC is valid for 1 year — if it expires before you complete licensing, you must start over.
Ohio has a partial helmet law (ORC §4511.53). Helmets are required for: all riders and passengers under 18, all TIPIC permit holders regardless of age, and novice riders during their first year of endorsement regardless of age. Experienced adults who have completed their novice year are not legally required to wear a helmet. Ohio is unique in that failure to wear a helmet cannot be raised as contributory negligence in civil lawsuits for riders who are legally exempt. However, Ohio safety data shows 71% of motorcycle fatalities over a recent 5-year period involved unhelmeted riders — helmets are strongly recommended even when not legally required.
All new Ohio motorcycle endorsement or license holders are designated as 'novice' for their first year, regardless of age. The novice expiration date is printed on the Ohio license. During the novice year, the rider must wear a helmet whenever operating a motorcycle on Ohio's public roads. A 50-year-old getting their first Ohio motorcycle endorsement is a novice and must wear a helmet for that entire first year.
No — completing a Motorcycle Ohio Basic Course waives the riding skills test only. The 40-question knowledge test at the Ohio BMV is still required for all applicants. The completion card is valid for 60 days from the date of issuance to waive the skills test. If you don't visit the BMV within 60 days, the skills test waiver expires and you must take the skills test.
No. Lane splitting is illegal in Ohio. Ohio law does not authorize lane splitting or lane filtering. Motorcycles must remain within a single marked lane. Note: two motorcycles may legally ride side-by-side within a single lane (lane sharing) — this is different from lane splitting. Lane splitting evidence can be used to assign fault in Ohio crash claims.
Ohio uses OVI — Operating a Vehicle Impaired — instead of DUI. The standard BAC limit is 0.08% for riders 21+. Ohio also has a "Super OVI" at 0.17%+ with significantly enhanced mandatory penalties. Riders under 21 face OVUAC (Operating a Vehicle After Underage Consumption) at just 0.02% BAC. Ohio OVI covers alcohol, drugs, legal recreational marijuana, and prescription medications that impair riding ability.
Ohio requires minimum motorcycle coverage of $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident / $25,000 property damage (25/50/25). These are the same minimums as for passenger vehicles in Ohio. Carrying higher limits plus uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage is strongly recommended — Ohio has a significant percentage of uninsured drivers and serious motorcycle injuries routinely exceed minimum limits.
The 40-question Ohio test covers: motorcycle controls and operation (T-CLOCS, SEE, SIPDE, TIPIC restrictions, min age 15.5 years), lane positioning (lane splitting illegal, lane sharing legal, no interstates for TIPIC holders), road signs and signals, helmet and safety gear (novice rule, permit helmet requirement, Ohio's unique helmet non-use civil protection), Ohio traffic laws (OVI/OVUAC terminology, Super OVI at 0.17%, 25/50/25 insurance, 6-year OVI lookback, modified comparative fault at 50%), hazardous conditions (Great Lakes lake-effect, Ohio deer, harvest debris, bridge grates), passengers and cargo, and rider fitness and responsibility.
Ohio stands out in several ways: the test is 40 questions (most states use 15–25), the pass mark is 75% (most states use 80%), Ohio uses OVI not DUI, the minimum permit age is 15 years and 6 months (not simply 15 or 16), and Ohio has a unique novice rider helmet requirement applying to all new licensees regardless of age. Ohio is also unique in that helmet non-use cannot be raised as contributory negligence for riders legally exempt from wearing one.
