Pennsylvania Junior Learner’s Permit Test – Teen FAQ

This FAQ explains the Pennsylvania Junior Learner’s Permit Test for drivers under 18. It covers how the PennDOT teen knowledge test works, what you need to bring for your PA junior learner’s permit, and how to prepare using realistic PA teen permit practice tests.

The Pennsylvania Junior Learner’s Permit Test is the official PennDOT knowledge test for teen drivers under 18. Passing this exam allows you to get a Junior Learner’s Permit so you can start supervised driving with a licensed adult in Pennsylvania.
The PennDOT teen knowledge test has 18 multiple-choice questions. You must answer at least 15 correctly to pass and receive your PA junior learner’s permit.
The Pennsylvania Junior Learner’s Permit Test includes questions on: road signs, traffic signals, right-of-way, speed limits, school bus laws, work zones, DUI rules, and basic safe driving practices. All questions come from the Pennsylvania Driver’s Manual.
The questions are based on the same PennDOT driver’s manual for both adults and teens, but the rules for getting a license are different. Teens follow the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program and move from a Junior Learner’s Permit to a Junior License with extra restrictions on night driving and passengers.
To take the PA junior permit test, you normally need: a completed DL-180 (Learner’s Permit Application), a signed DL-180TD (Parent/Guardian Consent form), proof of identity and date of birth, Social Security number, and proof of Pennsylvania residency. You must also pass a vision screening on test day.
Most teens take the Pennsylvania Junior Learner’s Permit Test in person at a PennDOT Driver License Center. Some people search for a PA teen permit test online, but availability of online testing can change, so it’s always best to check the latest information directly from PennDOT.
The best way to prepare for the PA teen knowledge test is to read the Pennsylvania Driver’s Manual carefully and complete several PA teen permit practice tests. Practice tests that use real-style questions make the junior learner’s permit test feel familiar on exam day.
Once you pass the PennDOT teen knowledge test, you’ll receive your Junior Learner’s Permit. With this permit, you must log at least 65 hours of supervised driving, including night and bad-weather practice, before scheduling your Pennsylvania junior driver’s license test.
The PA Junior License is the next step after the junior permit. To qualify, you must hold the Junior Learner’s Permit for at least six months, complete 65 supervised hours, and pass the Pennsylvania teen road test. The Junior License has nighttime driving limits and passenger restrictions until you qualify for an unrestricted license.
If you don’t pass the Pennsylvania Junior Learner’s Permit Test, you can retake it. Before trying again, review the driver’s manual and take more PA teen permit practice tests, especially on the topics you missed, so you feel ready for your next attempt.
